Made In Vancouver Artist: Freakyzoid
Written by Caroline

freakazoid:
Part of Speech: n, adj.
Definition: a bizarre or very strange person; a person with outstanding or unusual skills but questionable sanity...
Step into the world of Freakyzoid. Meet Stafanya, a lone traveler who searches galaxies to find her home - the place where she belongs.
During this journey she receives intermittent transmissions, but has no way of knowing whether they are current or from years ago. Along the way, she makes contact with Loxley, who helps her plot a course to earth. In spite of a crash landing, the two are united. Now on earth, the real journey of their souls begin…
Stafanya and Loxley make up the electronic music duo called Freakyzoid. Their ethereal vocals and whimsical lyrics combine both classical & electronic instrumentation with live sampling to create a dream-like soundscape that captures and delights their audiences.
The two have been working together since 2007 and have been invited to play at various music festivals in British Columbia, including the Soundwave Summer Music Festival near Tofino, B.C. and this year’s Made In Vancouver Festival.
Freakyzoid comes from the concept that it is part of the human condition to feel “different” or “odd,” says Stafanya. “Some people respond to this by conforming to a group and others can't help but be cast out because of their differences…I have grown up feeling separate and misunderstood by the world. This freakyzoid project is about my journey back to earth.”
Freakyzoid’s first EP, ironically entitled "Understood," is their interpretation of the ultimate feeling for a “freak” to experience. The song sums it up with the idea that understanding is something we give ourselves. “The reality is, that everyone is a freakyzoid of sorts trying to find his way through the obstacles before him - trying to have that connection,” says Stafanya.
What you do you think makes the Vancouver Arts & Culture scene unique?
Well - it's a melting pot so artists are bringing traditions from other parts of Canada and the world and mixing with the native arts culture.
What does it mean to you to be part of the Made in Vancouver festival?
We're stoked to be part of this festival. It's a great opportunity for us to have an international audience.
Why is it important for the community to support local Arts & Culture?
It's important because community is a fundamental support from which local artists can derive the courage to keep going. Everyone needs community - especially freaky artist types who may be quite isolated otherwise.
What is the one thing you hope visitors to Vancouver will take home?
I hope visitors take home with them the feeling that Vancouver is made up of mostly friendly people.
Freakyzoid is currently working on their new album called "Dark - Light".
